The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Brand Forum (BBF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at repositioning Bangladesh’s apparel sector as a modern, sustainable and innovation-driven industry in the global market.
The agreement, signed at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, outlines a collaborative roadmap to transform the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector from a “Factory Nation” to an “Innovation Nation” by 2030. The initiative seeks to reshape the global perception of Bangladesh’s apparel industry while strengthening its competitiveness as a responsible sourcing destination.
BGMEA Vice President (Finance) Mizanur Rahman and BBF Founder and Managing Director Shariful Islam signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations.
The partnership comes at a time when Bangladesh’s apparel industry is striving to move beyond its reputation as a cost-competitive manufacturing hub and position itself as a centre for sustainable production, innovation and design excellence.

Industry leaders say stronger branding and communication strategies are increasingly important as global buyers place greater emphasis on sustainability, traceability and value-added capabilities in sourcing markets.
Under the partnership, BGMEA and BBF will jointly implement a strategic initiative titled “From Factory Nation to Innovation Nation – Reimagining Bangladesh Apparel 2030.” The programme aims to elevate the global image of Bangladesh’s garment industry while highlighting its strengths in green manufacturing, innovation and next-generation leadership.
Key components of the initiative include the development of a global branding and communication strategy to present Bangladesh as an innovation-led apparel hub.
The collaboration will also establish an Innovation Lab at BGMEA to engage young innovators and entrepreneurs in solving critical challenges facing the apparel sector. The platform will encourage fresh ideas and technological solutions to improve sustainability, productivity and competitiveness.
Another major component is the creation of a Leadership Academy aimed at strengthening the capabilities of mid- and senior-level professionals in the garment sector. The academy will focus on leadership development, institutional capacity building and expanding opportunities for women leaders within the industry.
The partnership will also focus on strengthening youth engagement in the apparel sector. Planned initiatives include youth festivals, campus ambassador programmes and national competitions designed to encourage talented students and young innovators to pursue careers in Bangladesh’s garment industry.
Knowledge-sharing will be another important pillar of the collaboration. BGMEA and BBF plan to produce research reports and case studies highlighting the achievements of environmentally sustainable factories and their contributions toward global sustainability targets such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Bangladesh currently hosts the highest number of LEED-certified green garment factories in the world, a factor industry leaders believe can be leveraged to strengthen the country’s brand as a responsible sourcing hub.
The partnership will also explore opportunities to expand Bangladesh’s global visibility by facilitating collaborations with international fashion brands and designers. One such initiative includes building stronger connections between green garment factories in Bangladesh and Japanese brands, potentially leading to the development of a joint sustainable fashion label.

BGMEA’s participation in major international events is also part of the strategy. The organizations plan to showcase Bangladesh’s evolving apparel industry at global platforms such as the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and other international forums.
Through the partnership, BBF will provide strategic branding consultancy, knowledge support and communication expertise to help strengthen BGMEA’s presence in both national and global platforms.
BGMEA, in turn, will contribute industry data, insights and active engagement from its member factories to ensure that the initiatives reflect the realities and priorities of the country’s garment sector.
Distinguished attendees at the signing ceremony included BGMEA Director Shah Rayeed Chowdhury; Chairman of the Branding Standing Committee Khan Monirul Alam; Chairman of the Publicity and Publication Standing Committee Masud Kabir; Chairman of the Trade Fair and Event Standing Committee M. Sazedul Karim; and BBF Group CEO Sajid Mahbub.
Both organizations expressed optimism that the two-year partnership will strengthen international confidence in Bangladesh’s garment industry and support its long-term transformation.
Bangladesh’s readymade garment sector is the backbone of the country’s export economy, accounting for more than 80 percent of national export earnings and employing millions of workers.
Industry stakeholders believe that strategic branding, innovation and leadership development will be crucial in ensuring that Bangladesh remains competitive in a rapidly evolving global fashion supply chain.
By aligning industry leadership with branding expertise, the BGMEA–BBF partnership aims to position Bangladesh not only as a leading manufacturing destination but also as a global hub for sustainable and innovation-driven apparel production by the end of the decade.
