Borealis and AnQore Partner to Launch World’s First Circular Acrylonitrile

Borealis has joined forces with Dutch chemical producer AnQore to enable the transition to a circular and renewable value chain for acrylonitrile (ACN), a critical component in products ranging from automotive parts to electronics and water treatment solutions.

At the core of this partnership is Borealis’ Borvida™ B-propylene, a sustainable, ISCC PLUS-certified feedstock derived from non-food waste biomass. AnQore utilizes this circular propylene to produce Econitrile™-MB, the world’s first sustainable, mass-balanced ACN. Chemically identical to conventional acrylonitrile, Econitrile-MB offers a carbon footprint reduction of up to 90% per kilogram—without compromising performance.

Borvida B-propylene is part of Borealis’ broader Borvida portfolio of renewable and circular base chemicals. The value chain is tracked through a mass balance-based Chain of Custody model, ensuring traceability and transparency from raw material to finished product.

Econitrile-MB enables downstream industries—including ABS plastics, acrylamide, carbon fiber, nitrile rubber, and surfactants—to reduce their environmental impact. It has already been in production for several years, reinforcing the feasibility and scalability of circular chemical solutions.

Sjoerd Zuidema, CEO of AnQore, noted, “Thanks to our partnership with Borealis, we’re able to offer the world’s first circular, mass-balanced acrylonitrile and support our customers in making more sustainable products.”

Thomas Van De Velde, Senior Vice President of Base Chemicals at Borealis, added, “This partnership shows that by working together across the value chain, we can unlock the value of waste. We’re delivering high-performance solutions that meet the evolving sustainability goals of our customers.”

This collaboration reflects Borealis’ We4Customers strategy, which aims to empower value chain partners with advanced circular materials and support sustainable transformation across industries.
