Fakir Apparels Joins bluesign System to Advance Sustainable Manufacturing

Bangladeshi apparel manufacturer Fakir Apparels Ltd. on Tuesday announced that it has joined the global bluesign® system as a “System Partner”, signalling a commitment to cleaner, safer and more transparent production practices.

According to a company statement, Fakir Apparels emphasised the move will benefit its workforce by eliminating hazardous chemicals before they enter the production process and improving workplace health and safety. It also said the partnership will allow its brand- and retailer-clients to access verified impact data and align more fully with international sustainability and regulatory standards.

As part of the wider bluesign® community, Fakir Apparels states that its efforts will contribute toward marked reductions in environmental impacts — citing roughly a 23 % decrease in fresh water consumption, 27 % lower energy intensity and 35 % fewer carbon emissions.

Fakir Apparels, based in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, is a major contract manufacturer of knit and woven garments for global brands. Its previous accolades include awards for factory safety, worker welfare and sustainability credentials.

Industry observers say the timing is significant: Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector is under pressure globally to raise environmental and labour standards, amid evolving regulations in Europe and increasing buyer scrutiny of supply-chain impacts. One recent analysis by bluesign® itself highlighted Bangladesh as “on an upward trajectory … not just for production but also for sustainability transformation.”

By becoming a bluesign® System Partner, Fakir Apparels positions itself alongside a network of manufacturers committed to verified chemical management and resource-efficiency. In doing so, it hopes to strengthen its appeal to leading international buyers that require strong compliance credentials.

However, analysts add that joining the partnership is only the first step, the challenge lies in operationalising the practices at scale across large-volume production environments, ensuring sustained improvements and maintaining transparency.
