Germany’s LANXESS promotes Oxone for sustainable detergents

LANXESS is expanding the use of its Oxone Monopersulfate Compound as a cold-wash cleaning ingredient, positioning the oxidising agent as a high-performance option for detergent makers responding to rising demand for sustainable household products.

The German specialty chemicals producer said Oxone can deliver strong stain removal at temperatures as low as 20°C, enabling households to cut energy use and lower annual CO₂ emissions by up to 27 kg compared with washing at 40°C. The compound is marketed as effective against difficult stains such as wine, coffee and tea, outperforming sodium percarbonate alone or combined with TAED.

Kelly Board, technical application manager for oxidation at LANXESS, said the ingredient shows how advanced chemistry can support sustainability by reducing energy requirements without compromising cleaning performance. The company added that lower-temperature washing can also help reduce microfiber release.

Oxone’s fast dissolution allows for compact formulations, including powders, pods and tablets. Once oxidation occurs, it breaks down into potassium and sulfate ions in under 10 seconds. LANXESS said the compound can be tailored to support colorfastness and is chlorine-free and odorless.

The product’s risk classification under Class 8, rather than Class 5.1 for oxidisers, offers additional transport and storage benefits for manufacturers. Beyond laundry detergents, Oxone can be used in automatic dishwashing products, appliance cleaners and home surface cleaners.
