Industry–Academia Collaboration Is Key For Sustainable Textile Future

4 Min Read

Industry–Academia knowledge sharing and collaboration are now being recognized as the most effective path toward a sustainable future for Bangladesh’s textile and RMG sector. Experts believe that without strong research partnerships between universities and industries, true innovation and sustainability will remain out of reach.

In the USA and Europe, industries play a major role in supporting research by providing funding, mentorship, and data access to universities. This strong partnership between academic institutions and industrial enterprises has led to rapid innovation and sustainable growth.

Why Needs Industry–Academia Collaboration

A similar vision was shared during an international webinar on “Ethics in Research & Publication,” held on Sunday at 9:00 PM (BDT). The event was organized by Academia Research & Innovations in association with the Science and Research Club, BTEC, with Bunon Bee, Textile and Garments Merchandising Blog (TGMG), and BD Fashion Journal as strategic media partners.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Subrata Chandra Das (Ph.D. in Composite Materials, Researcher at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway), and moderator Tarikul Islam (Ph.D. Researcher, University of Georgia, USA) highlighted that Bangladeshi textile universities and industries still have a wide knowledge-sharing gap, which prevents progress in innovation and sustainability.

They noted that although many textile industries have recently established R&D departments, most initiatives remain confined within individual organizations. At the same time, universities continue to teach traditional subjects that often do not reflect current industrial demands and challenges. Consequently, university research outcomes fail to meet the needs of the textile and RMG sectors.

Md. Sala Uddin, Advisor of Bunon Bee and Textile and Garments Merchandising Blog (TGMG), attended the session as a guest speaker, discussing the challenges and future opportunities of Industry–Academia collaboration in Bangladesh. He emphasized that Bunon Bee is actively working to reduce the knowledge gap by connecting textile students, educators, and industry professionals through research-based learning and discussion platforms.

During the webinar, Dr. Subrata C. Das explained the importance of ethics in research and publication, covering topics such as research types, authorship responsibilities, consequences of unethical practices, and how to connect with global scholars. Tarikul Islam shared emerging research trends in textiles, focusing on biodegradable plastics and their potential for the RMG sector.

The session was hosted by Md. Amir Khasru, Club Monitor of the Science & Research Club, BTEC. Students from various government and private textile universities and colleges across Bangladesh actively participated in the event, making it an engaging and insightful platform for knowledge exchange.

As Bangladesh enters its next phase of industrial growth, strengthening collaboration between academia and industry will be vital for sustained innovation and global competitiveness. Initiatives like these mark a positive step toward empowering future generations of textile engineers and researchers to contribute meaningfully to both the nation and the global market.

Fashion Business Journal was the media partner of this webinar.
