Jordan, Vietnam set sights on joint garment investments

The Jordan Chamber of Industry has reached a landmark understanding with Vietnamese garment firms, signalling a deepening of industrial ties between the two nations and a push for joint investments in Vietnam’s apparel sector.

Ihab Qadri, who oversees the leather and garment division at the chamber, said business delegations from Vietnam will soon visit Jordan to assess opportunities in its garment industry. The move was underscored by a recent roundtable in Hanoi, where King Abdullah II met leading Vietnamese textile executives alongside Jordanian industry representatives.

That meeting, held in coordination with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), explored the creation of integrated industrial ventures across the garment value chain, from fabric production to export-ready apparel. Jordan offered attractive incentives, particularly within dedicated garment industrial zones, to encourage Vietnamese firms to leverage its strategic location and market access.

Qadri emphasised that Vietnam’s expertise in raw materials, supply-chain integration, and scale manufacturing could complement Jordan’s strengths, particularly as global brands seek diversified production bases.

He noted that the understanding reflects Jordan’s ambition to be a serious contender in global apparel production, not only as a manufacturing hub but as a gateway to new markets.

King Abdullah, speaking at the forum, reiterated Jordan’s commitment to broadening economic cooperation with Vietnam. He praised Hanoi’s success in building a competitive textile sector and said Jordan stands ready to host Vietnamese investment, particularly in zones tailored to garment production.

IFC’s regional director for the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Khawaja Aftab Ahmed, highlighted the importance of the manufacturing sector for job creation and told attendees that his organization would continue to advise both sides on expanding investment, increasing exports and generating employment in line with Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision.

From the Vietnamese side, Vu Duc Giang, chairman of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association, expressed eagerness to visit Jordan, citing potential for market diversification, brand expansion and shared development.

The garment sector plays a major role in Jordan’s economy. According to Jordanian officials, the industry includes about 1,000 factories and employs around 95,000 people, and exported about US$2.4 billion in 2024, mostly to the U.S.

Qadri said the cooperation aims to align Jordanian and Vietnamese firms on commercial strategies, potentially relocating production lines, setting up joint factories in Jordan’s industrial zones, or building fully integrated operations serving global markets.
