Square Textiles PLC has reinforced its commitment to sustainable industrial growth by inaugurating a 5.83-megawatt rooftop solar power system at its manufacturing facilities in Gazipur.

The initiative, launched on Tuesday, May 5, marks one of the significant renewable energy investments in Bangladesh’s textile and apparel sector and reflects the industry’s growing shift toward low-carbon production.

The project received support from Germany and the World Bank Group as part of broader efforts to accelerate clean energy adoption in Bangladesh’s industrial sector. The solar installation is expected to generate renewable electricity directly for factory operations, reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuel-based power and improving long-term energy efficiency.

According to project stakeholders, the solar system will help cut approximately 4,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The move comes at a time when global apparel brands and retailers, particularly in Europe and North America, are increasing pressure on suppliers to reduce environmental impact and comply with stricter sustainability standards.

Officials from the German Embassy in Dhaka described the initiative as an “exciting step” toward Bangladesh’s renewable energy transition and highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration in supporting climate-friendly industrial development. Representatives from the embassy, senior executives of Square Textiles, and development partners attended the inauguration ceremony.

The project also aligns with Bangladesh’s broader renewable energy ambitions as the country seeks to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on imported fuels. Industry experts believe rooftop solar systems are becoming increasingly important for export-oriented manufacturers facing rising electricity costs and growing international compliance requirements.

Square Group has been gradually expanding its renewable energy footprint in recent years. Earlier this year, the group, in partnership with Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL), celebrated the implementation of rooftop solar projects across its industrial units with a combined installed capacity of 7.51 MWp.

Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry, which accounts for the majority of the country’s export earnings, is increasingly investing in green technologies to maintain competitiveness in the global market.

Renewable energy adoption, energy-efficient manufacturing, and environmentally certified factories are now considered key factors in securing international buyers and ensuring long-term sustainability.

With this latest solar initiative, Square Textiles PLC further positions itself among the leading sustainability-focused manufacturers in Bangladesh’s textile sector, demonstrating how renewable energy investments can support both environmental goals and industrial competitiveness.
