Bangladesh has further cemented its position as the world’s leading hub for sustainable apparel manufacturing, with four more ready-made garment (RMG) factories earning internationally recognized LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
The newly certified factories are:
* Canvas Garments Pvt. Ltd. (Chattogram) – Platinum, 90 points, certified under LEED O+M: Existing Buildings v4.1
* Matrix Sweaters Ltd. (Gazipur) – Platinum, 88 points, certified under LEED O+M: Existing Buildings v4.1
* Karim Textiles Limited (Kaliakoir, Gazipur) – Gold, 73 points, certified under LEED O+M: Existing Buildings v4.1
* Karim Tex Limited (Dhamrai, Dhaka) – Silver, 53 points, certified under LEED O+M: Existing Buildings v4
With these latest additions, Bangladesh now hosts 290 LEED-certified RMG factories, including 125 Platinum and 145 Gold certified facilities.
The country also now accounts for 53 of the world’s top 100 highest-scoring LEED-certified factories, reinforcing its unmatched leadership in green industrial development.
Green Leadership Continues to Grow
The latest milestone reflects Bangladesh’s continued investment in environmentally responsible manufacturing, at a time when global brands are placing greater emphasis on sustainability, carbon reduction, energy efficiency and responsible sourcing.
A significant feature of the new certifications is that three factories achieved certification under LEED O+M (Operations & Maintenance): Existing Buildings, highlighting that sustainability is no longer limited to newly constructed facilities. Existing factories are increasingly upgrading their operations through improved energy management, water conservation, indoor environmental quality and waste management to meet international green building standards.

Industry Calls for Broader Green Transition
Sharing the update, Mohiuddin Rubel, Founder & CEO of Bangladesh Apparel Voice, described the achievement as another proud milestone for the country’s apparel industry.
He noted that Bangladesh’s growing number of LEED-certified factories demonstrates the sector’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing and strengthens its competitiveness as global buyers increasingly prioritize environmentally responsible sourcing. Rubel also emphasized that the next phase should focus on bringing small and medium-sized factories into the green transition while simultaneously improving productivity, adopting advanced technologies, developing skilled human resources and increasing value-added product manufacturing.
Beyond Certifications
While Bangladesh continues to dominate global LEED rankings, industry experts increasingly point out that green buildings alone are not enough to secure long-term competitiveness. Faster lead times, higher productivity, greater domestic value addition, renewable energy adoption and stronger innovation will be equally important as brands tighten sustainability and ESG requirements.
Nevertheless, the country’s expanding portfolio of green factories remains one of its strongest competitive advantages, helping position Bangladesh as a preferred sourcing destination for global fashion brands seeking responsible and low-impact manufacturing.
