KARL MAYER’s Life-Saving Nets Meet WHO Malaria Protection Rules

Germany’s KARL MAYER Group says its warp knitting machines are enabling manufacturers to produce mosquito nets with the precision and efficiency needed to meet World Health Organization protection standards, as global demand for the life-saving textiles continues to grow.

Mosquito-borne diseases kill close to a million people a year worldwide, the company said, with malaria alone responsible for around 597,000 deaths among roughly 263 million cases in 2023. The WHO now recommends long-lasting insecticidal nets, or LLINs, as the primary defense, citing their ease of use, effectiveness and low production cost.

KARL MAYER said its knitted mesh textiles are engineered to deliver protection on two fronts: a mechanical barrier created by precisely defined mesh density, and a chemical deterrent from insecticide treatment. The nets must also meet strict strength thresholds. According to WHO specifications cited by the company, nets made from 100 denier multifilament polyester yarn require a minimum bursting strength of 505 kilopascals, while 75 denier yarn must withstand at least 220 kilopascals.

Most knitted mosquito nets are produced on two-bar tricot machines, specifically KARL MAYER’s TM 2 and HKS 2-M models. Producers working with polyester filament yarn typically use machine fineness of E28 or E32, while polyethylene (HDPE) monofilament yarn calls for E14, with some variation common at both ends.

The two yarn types differ in how insecticide is applied: polyester nets are impregnated with the chemical during finishing, while HDPE nets have the insecticide built into the yarn granulate itself. Three-bar machines in E18 are also used for multifilament processing in select protective applications.

KARL MAYER emphasized that manufacturing precision is not a cosmetic concern but a matter of life and death. Its machines are built to hold tight tolerances on mesh opening uniformity, dimensional stability, tear strength and fabric weight, the company said, noting that deviations from specification in a finished net can directly compromise the protection it offers.

The market opportunity behind that precision is substantial. Africa alone distributes hundreds of millions of long-lasting insecticidal nets on a regular basis, with replacement typically required every three to five years, creating a recurring demand cycle.

Beyond public health programs, KARL MAYER pointed to a second growth driver: mosquito nets are increasingly sold as consumer and outdoor gear rather than solely as a health product distributed to the estimated several billion people at risk of mosquito-borne illness.

Market Intelo valued the global mosquito net market at 3.2 billion dollars in 2025, the company said, with the market projected to reach 5.1 billion dollars by 2034, implying a compound annual growth rate of 5.8 percent.
