In an era when sustainability is increasingly shaping global supply chains, Bangladesh-based HAMS Garments Ltd. has achieved a milestone that is drawing international attention.
The export-oriented apparel manufacturer has earned the highest LEED score ever recorded under the U.S. Green Building Council’s certification system, securing an unprecedented 108 out of 110 points under LEED v4 Operations and Maintenance (O+M).
The achievement not only earned the company LEED Platinum certification but also established a new global benchmark for sustainable industrial operations, reinforcing Bangladesh’s growing reputation as a leader in green manufacturing.
Under the leadership of Managing Director Engr. Md. Shafiqur Rahman, the company has invested in building a culture of operational excellence and environmental responsibility.
“I am very proud of our team for achieving LEED Platinum certification with an outstanding score,” Rahman said. “This milestone reflects our commitment to excellence and integrity at every level. By transforming our facility into a world-class green building, we are creating a healthier workplace for our people while significantly reducing our environmental impact.”
The Science Behind the Score
Achieving a score of 108 required far more than installing energy-efficient equipment. LEED evaluates a broad range of sustainability and operational criteria, including energy management, water conservation, waste reduction, indoor environmental quality, transportation planning, site sustainability, procurement policies, and organizational governance. HAMS excelled across nearly every category.

The facility achieved full scores in Energy and Atmosphere, Sustainable Sites, Innovation, and Regional Priority credits, while also demonstrating outstanding performance in water efficiency, waste diversion, and indoor environmental quality.
Key initiatives include:
- Advanced energy-management systems that significantly reduce energy consumption
- Comprehensive water-saving technologies and monitoring systems
- Rainwater harvesting and resource recovery programs
- Near-total diversion of operational waste from landfills
- Improved indoor environmental conditions for employees
- Sustainable procurement and facility-management practices
- Employee engagement and environmental awareness programs
According to company data, these initiatives have helped reduce water consumption by approximately 30 percent and energy use by around 20 percent compared with conventional industrial operations.
According to company management, the factory spent less than Tk2 crore in additional expenditures related to securing the certification. Much of the progress came through disciplined operational management, strategic planning, employee training, preventive maintenance, documentation, and resource optimization.
Creating Value for People and the Planet
While environmental performance is often the focus of green certifications, the human dimension remains equally important.
The HAMS facility employs approximately 7,000 workers, and many of its sustainability initiatives directly contribute to a healthier and more productive workplace. Improved air quality, better lighting, enhanced thermal comfort, and employee-focused operational practices help create a safer and more comfortable working environment.
As global sourcing continues to evolve, HAMS Garments stands as a powerful example of how innovation, disciplined management, and long-term vision can transform a factory into a global symbol of sustainable manufacturing excellence.
