Sri Lankan apparel manufacturer Winterquilts (Pvt) Ltd. has adopted Coats Digital’s GSDCost costing platform alongside the company’s newly launched AI-powered GSDQuest tool, in a move aimed at standardising garment costing and speeding up production decision-making across its factories.
The company, which has supplied international retailers including Marks & Spencer for more than three decades, operates four manufacturing facilities and employs more than 3,000 workers, producing around 700,000 garments each month. Winterquilts said it needed a more consistent and structured approach to garment costing as it expands its manufacturing operations.
Under the rollout, GSDCost will be deployed across six product libraries, covering jersey knit and athleisure wear, woven shirts and blouses, woven bottoms, ladies’ fashion, babywear and childrenswear. The manufacturer has also invested in Coats Digital’s Fair Wage Tool, Thread Demand, Material Size Factor and Support Desk modules to broaden its digital manufacturing capabilities.
Rajen Amalean, Managing Director of Winterquilts, said existing processes required significant manual effort and created challenges with turnaround times, consistency and visibility, adding that the company wanted a more scientific approach to improve costing accuracy and reduce operational firefighting.

GSDCost, built on Coats Digital’s GSD methodology, uses internationally recognised motion codes and predetermined times to generate scientifically accurate Standard Minute Values. GSDQuest, the company’s newer AI tool, analyses garment images to automatically generate detailed Bills of Labour within seconds, a capability Coats Digital says reduces manual costing effort while improving consistency.

Akshay Amalean, Director at Winterquilts, said Coats Digital’s understanding of apparel manufacturing combined with the GSD methodology made it the right partner for the company’s next stage of development, adding that GSDQuest introduces AI capabilities that simplify and accelerate time-consuming processes.
Shanika Kande Lekamge, Group Industrial Engineering Manager at Winterquilts, said the company is excited about AI-powered costing’s potential to cut time spent on repetitive tasks, allowing teams to focus on higher-value work.
Dhananjaya Dammika, Solutions Consulting Manager at Coats Digital, said Winterquilts is combining trusted industry expertise with intelligent technology to build a digital foundation for future manufacturing demands.
The investment adds Winterquilts to a growing list of Asian apparel manufacturers turning to AI-driven costing tools as the industry faces pressure to speed up product development while maintaining pricing accuracy amid rising cost scrutiny from global brands.
Coats Digital said the rollout reflects a broader shift among manufacturers combining established engineering methodologies with newer automation tools, rather than replacing one with the other, as apparel makers look to shorten development cycles without compromising on accuracy.
