Industry Pays Tribute to Visionary Apparel Leader Abdullah Hil Rakib

The first death anniversary of Abdullah Hil Rakib, Founder and Managing Director of TEAM Group and former Senior Vice President of BGMEA, was observed with profound respect and remembrance, bringing together leaders and stakeholders from across Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) and textile sectors.

The memorial gathering reflected the immense impact Rakib had on the country’s apparel industry. Current and former leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), along with entrepreneurs, exporters, manufacturers, business leaders, and industry professionals, attended the event to pay tribute to a man widely regarded as one of the sector’s most influential and forward-thinking leaders.

Mohammad Salahuddin, Director of Riaz Garments Ltd. and adviser to a textile and garment knowledge platform, was among those present, joining industry peers in honoring Rakib’s legacy and contributions to Bangladesh’s industrial development.

Abdullah Hil Rakib passed away on June 8, 2025, in a tragic canoeing accident in Ontario, Canada, at the age of 54. His untimely death was widely mourned throughout the country’s business community and the global apparel industry.

Over the course of his career, Rakib emerged as one of Bangladesh’s most respected apparel entrepreneurs. Under his leadership, TEAM Group evolved from a garments and textile business established in 2009 into a diversified conglomerate spanning apparel manufacturing, textiles, pharmaceuticals, information technology, retail, and real estate.

The group grew into one of the country’s leading apparel exporters, employing more than 20,000 people and generating significant contributions to Bangladesh’s export economy.

Rakib was particularly recognized for his commitment to sustainability and innovation. He championed green manufacturing, responsible business practices, and technological advancement within the apparel sector.

Under his guidance, TEAM Group developed internationally recognized green factories and became a benchmark for sustainable industrial growth in Bangladesh. His initiatives extended beyond business success to include research, innovation hubs, skill development programs, and responsible business practices aimed at ensuring the long-term competitiveness of the country’s apparel industry.

Beyond his corporate achievements, Rakib played a significant leadership role in BGMEA, serving as Director, Vice President, and later Senior Vice President. During his tenure, he contributed to expanding Bangladesh’s apparel exports into emerging markets such as Japan, Brazil, Mexico, and Chile.

He was also a strong advocate for human resource development, industry-academia collaboration, and the cultivation of future talent for the textile and garment sector.
