Global denim brand G-STAR has been named a Champion under the ZDHC Roadmap to Zero programme, a global initiative focused on eliminating hazardous chemicals from textile and footwear production and improving environmental standards across complex fashion supply chains.

The recognition was shared by G-STAR through its official LinkedIn profile, where the company highlighted its achievement under the ZDHC framework, which assesses brands on the depth of their chemical management systems and sustainability performance across production networks.

The ZDHC Roadmap to Zero programme, led by the ZDHC Foundation, is a multi-stakeholder initiative involving global apparel brands, chemical suppliers and manufacturers. It aims to standardise chemical management practices across the textile industry, with a long-term objective of achieving zero discharge of hazardous chemicals into water systems.

Champion status is awarded to companies that demonstrate advanced implementation of ZDHC requirements, including compliance with the Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL), structured supplier engagement systems, wastewater management controls and verified progress in reducing hazardous chemical usage.

The designation places G-STAR among a limited group of apparel companies recognised for moving beyond basic compliance and contributing to broader systemic improvements in chemical safety across global supply chains.

G-STAR has long positioned sustainability as a core pillar of its business strategy, particularly within its denim-focused operations. The brand’s RAW Responsibility programme includes initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact in manufacturing, improving material traceability and strengthening supply chain oversight.

The company has been engaged with ZDHC-aligned frameworks for several years, integrating chemical management standards into sourcing and production processes. This includes oversight of wet-processing stages such as dyeing and finishing, which are widely considered among the most environmentally intensive phases of denim manufacturing due to high water consumption and chemical inputs.

Denim production has historically been associated with significant environmental challenges, particularly in wastewater management and chemical discharge in manufacturing hubs. Industry initiatives such as ZDHC aim to address these issues by introducing uniform standards for chemical use, testing protocols and supplier compliance systems.

More than 370 organisations participate globally in the ZDHC programme, spanning fashion brands, suppliers and chemical manufacturers. However, only a select group achieve Champion-level recognition, which is awarded based on verified implementation performance rather than sustainability commitments alone.

The ZDHC framework has become an increasingly important benchmark for the global apparel industry, particularly as brands face growing pressure from regulators, investors and consumers to demonstrate measurable environmental performance. Chemical management is now a key focus area within broader ESG reporting frameworks, especially in relation to Scope 3 supply chain impacts.

For G-STAR, the Champion designation strengthens its positioning within the sustainable denim segment, where brands are increasingly evaluated on traceable environmental performance and compliance with recognised international frameworks.

The recognition also reflects wider industry momentum toward safer chemistry, circular production systems and improved supply chain transparency. Apparel companies are increasingly moving toward data-driven sustainability models that prioritise verified reductions in environmental impact rather than broad voluntary commitments.

ZDHC’s Roadmap to Zero programme has emerged as a central framework for this transition, particularly in high-impact sectors such as denim, where chemical use, dyeing processes and water-intensive finishing remain key environmental concerns.

G-STAR’s inclusion as a ZDHC Champion underscores its alignment with these evolving industry expectations and reinforces its long-standing focus on integrating sustainability into core production and sourcing decisions.

As global apparel supply chains continue to evolve under stricter environmental scrutiny, such certifications are becoming increasingly significant in defining brand credibility, supplier relationships and long-term market positioning.
