U.S. industrial fabric supplier MMI Textiles said technical textiles are central to how manufacturers design workwear, as employers seek garments that protect workers without hindering movement through long shifts.

In a company blog post published on Nov 2, MMI said fabric choice should be guided by four factors: protection, comfort, visibility and durability. The right balance depends on each job’s hazards, from heat and abrasion to moisture, chemicals and low light, the company said.

On protection, MMI noted that some textiles offer flame-resistant or heat-resistant properties for workers who may encounter fire or high temperatures, while others resist abrasion from equipment, tools and rough surfaces. It cautioned that fabric is only one part of protective apparel, though fiber content and construction shape how a finished garment performs.

Comfort was highlighted as a priority. Stretch fabrics help workers bend and reach, lightweight materials reduce garment weight, and moisture-wicking constructions move perspiration away from the body, the company said.

For employees working near vehicles, heavy equipment or traffic, high-visibility fabrics pair bright colors with reflective materials to improve visibility in low light. Construction crews, utility teams, road workers and warehouse staff may need such clothing, MMI said.

Durability matters because workwear is worn repeatedly, washed often and exposed to pulling and friction, the company said, citing abrasion resistance, tear strength and tensile strength as key measures. Woven and knitted structures offer different characteristics depending on end use, it added.

MMI supplies woven and stretch woven fabrics, while its Jason Mills division offers knitted and mesh materials that provide stretch and flexibility for garments requiring easy movement.

The company is exhibiting at Advanced Textiles Expo 2026 in Orlando, Florida, from Nov 3 to 5, showing technical textiles and narrow fabrics at Booth 1311 as the three-day show opens.
