Finnish fibre innovator Spinnova and Danish footwear group ECCO have introduced a new generation of sustainable footwear with the launch of the BIOM 720, a commercial shoe integrating textile fibre made from leather waste, marking a significant step forward in circular material innovation.
The product debut, confirmed through company releases on April 29, represents one of the first large-scale applications of Spinnova’s proprietary fibre technology using protein-based raw materials derived from leather industry waste. The fibre is produced under the companies’ joint venture Respin, which aims to convert industrial side streams into high-performance textile inputs.
Unlike conventional textile production methods, Spinnova’s process is mechanical and does not rely on harmful chemicals. The company says the technology generates no microplastics and significantly reduces water consumption and carbon emissions, positioning it as a viable alternative to both synthetic fibres and traditional man-made cellulosics.
The BIOM 720 launch signals a transition from prototype development to market-ready products, underscoring the commercial potential of circular materials in the global footwear sector. ECCO had previously showcased early prototypes using the material, but the latest release confirms the fibre’s readiness for consumer use at scale.
“This is a clear validation of years of development work,” industry analysts note, as brands face increasing regulatory and consumer pressure to reduce environmental impact and improve supply chain transparency.
The collaboration is rooted in Respin, a joint initiative between Spinnova, ECCO and leather supplier KT Trading. The venture has established pilot-scale production in Finland, focusing specifically on transforming leather waste — traditionally a low-value by-product — into durable, textile-grade fibre.

For ECCO, which operates its own leather production facilities, the project provides a pathway to close the loop within its supply chain. By converting waste into usable material for footwear uppers, the company can reduce reliance on virgin resources while maintaining performance standards.
Spinnova, meanwhile, has been sharpening its strategic focus on scalable partnerships, with the ECCO collaboration emerging as a central pillar of its commercialization roadmap. The company has previously highlighted its ability to process multiple raw materials, including wood pulp, agricultural residues and textile waste, but leather-based fibre is now among its most advanced applications.
The timing of the launch aligns with broader shifts across the textile and apparel industries, where circularity is rapidly moving from niche experimentation to industrial priority. Global brands are increasingly investing in technologies that can deliver both environmental benefits and cost competitiveness — a balance that has historically proven difficult to achieve.
While production volumes and pricing details for the BIOM 720 have not been disclosed, the launch is expected to provide valuable insights into consumer acceptance and scalability of next-generation fibres.
