Sixteen-year-old Philadelphia Union midfielder Cavan Sullivan became the first footballer to wear Adidas’ fully 3D-printed boots in a competitive match, debuting the bespoke pair during an MLS fixture against the New York Red Bulls on July 23, marking a milestone for additive manufacturing in professional sport.
The boots were built through Adidas’ Project R.A.P., short for Radical Athlete Perception, which uses advanced additive-manufacturing techniques to construct a boot’s structure layer by layer around a player’s exact foot geometry. The process allows designers to tune support and cushioning to an athlete’s individual biomechanics rather than relying on standardized lasts, producing a completely bespoke fit. Visually, the boots carry a futuristic ribbed silhouette in a pink-and-red colorway that exposes the structural layering created by the printing process, a look Adidas had teased since a report in March pointed to an imminent launch of the R.A.P. line.
Beyond the manufacturing breakthrough, Sullivan’s pair carries personal significance. The boots feature the flags of Bangladesh, Germany and the United States, a tribute to his multicultural heritage. His Bangladeshi roots trace to his maternal grandmother, Sultana Alam, who was born and raised in Dhaka before relocating to the United States to pursue a doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania and later working for the United Nations.
His maternal grandfather, Klaus Krippendorff, was born in Germany and is also a University of Pennsylvania professor, while Sullivan’s middle name, Ayaz, further reflects his maternal family’s heritage. The combination of family ties makes Sullivan eligible to represent the United States, Germany or Bangladesh at international level, a rare cross-continental eligibility profile for a player only beginning his senior career.

Sullivan has been on a fast track since breaking into professional football. He made his MLS debut on July 17, 2024, at 14 years and 293 days old, becoming the youngest player to appear in a major North American professional sports league. That record, paired with his club performances for the Union, has made him one of the most closely watched young prospects in American soccer, drawing attention from scouts and sponsors alike. Wearing the first competitive-match pair of 3D-printed boots adds another marker to that trajectory and gives Adidas a high-profile face for a technology it has been developing for months.
For Adidas, the debut represents a tangible step toward commercial use of additive manufacturing in football footwear, an area rivals have also been exploring as brands look to differentiate performance products through personalization rather than mass production. Analysts have suggested that 3D-printed footwear could eventually allow manufacturers to shorten development cycles and cut material waste by building only the structure an athlete’s foot requires, though widespread production remains some way off given current printing speeds and costs. Sullivan’s appearance functions as a real-match proof of concept, giving Adidas performance data and public visibility simultaneously.
Neither Adidas nor Philadelphia Union has released pricing or availability details for the R.A.P. line, and it remains unclear whether the technology will extend to other players or reach retail this year. For now, Sullivan’s boots stand as the most visible example yet of a manufacturing shift that designers have long promised but rarely delivered on a competitive field.
