Bangladesh’s footwear and leather goods sector strengthened its global engagement as the Footwear Leathergoods & Accessories Exporters Association of Bangladesh participated in the 43rd International Footwear Conference 2026 held in Phnom Penh from July 11 to 13, reinforcing the country’s push to expand beyond its dominant apparel exports.
Representing the association, Vice President Md. Nasir Khan and Secretary General Major Md. Rafiqul Islam (Retd.) engaged with international industry leaders, policymakers, and business stakeholders during the three-day event, which is widely regarded as a premier platform for the global footwear and leather goods value chain.

The conference brought together participants from across manufacturing hubs and sourcing markets, providing a forum to exchange insights on evolving trade regulations, sustainability compliance, investment flows, and technological innovation shaping the future of the footwear, leather and goods (FLG) sector.
FLAXA’s participation highlights Bangladesh’s growing ambition to position itself as a competitive sourcing destination for footwear and leather goods, complementing its well-established ready-made garment industry. Industry insiders say such global platforms are increasingly crucial as buyers demand higher standards in traceability, environmental compliance, and ethical sourcing.

At IFC 2026, discussions centred on key global shifts including stricter environmental regulations in major markets, supply chain transparency requirements, and the integration of sustainable materials and production technologies. These themes are particularly relevant for Bangladesh, where exporters are under pressure to align with evolving compliance frameworks in the European Union and other key destinations.

Officials said the engagement also created opportunities to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation, explore new trade and investment avenues, and enhance collaboration with global footwear associations. Participation in such forums allows Bangladesh to stay updated on policy changes while showcasing its manufacturing capabilities to potential buyers and investors.
The association reiterated its commitment to supporting the sector through international partnerships, knowledge exchange, and strategic initiatives aimed at boosting export competitiveness. With rising competition from countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia, Bangladesh is seeking to upgrade its value proposition through innovation, product diversification, and sustainability-driven growth.
The footwear and leather goods sector is considered a key pillar for Bangladesh’s export diversification strategy, with policymakers and industry leaders aiming to increase its global market share in the coming years. Analysts note that continued engagement in international forums like IFC will be essential to securing investment, improving compliance readiness, and strengthening Bangladesh’s position in the global supply chain.
As Bangladesh accelerates efforts to become a reliable and sustainable sourcing hub, stakeholders believe stronger global linkages and proactive industry representation will play a decisive role in unlocking new growth opportunities for the country’s exporters.
