Kizik’s hands‑free shoe technology is coming to New Balance through a new licensing agreement with HandsFree Labs, the companies said Thursday, signaling a major shift toward convenience-driven footwear innovation. The deal marks a significant step for New Balance as it enters a fast-growing segment of the global footwear market that emphasizes slip-on ease over traditional laces.
Under the agreement, New Balance will integrate Kizik’s patented step-in system into a range of casual and performance shoes for men, women, and children. Kizik technology allows wearers to slide into shoes without bending over or tying laces, appealing to busy consumers, travelers, and those with mobility challenges. The collaboration also underscores New Balance’s push to innovate in categories where convenience and performance converge.

Founded in 2017, Kizik has amassed more than 200 patents, positioning its hands-free system as a scalable solution for major footwear brands. Nike has previously licensed the technology, highlighting growing industry interest in alternative entry systems.
While New Balance has not disclosed specific models or pricing, analysts expect Kizik-enabled shoes to debut in 2027. Experts say hands-free designs could attract consumers seeking both performance and convenience, potentially boosting sales in segments historically dominated by lace-up footwear.
The partnership reflects a strategy by legacy brands to innovate without compromising design identity. With competitors exploring adaptive, tech-enhanced, and sustainable footwear, Kizik’s hands-free system represents a new frontier in the global sneaker market, combining accessibility, style, and performance.
