Hohenstein and BGMEA Collaborate to Boost Sustainability in Bangladesh’s RMG

A high-level delegation from the Hohenstein Group, a leading international service provider in testing, certification, and research from Germany, met with Mahmud Hasan Khan, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), at the BGMEA Complex in Dhaka.

The meeting served as a platform to discuss strategic areas of partnership focused on enhancing the global competitiveness of Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry, with a particular emphasis on advancing environmental sustainability.

The visiting delegation from Hohenstein Group included Dr. Stefan Droste, Managing Director & Group CEO; Julia Mecheels, Member of the Advisory Board; and Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman, Managing Director of Hohenstein Laboratories Bangladesh Limited.

During the discussions, the Hohenstein representatives outlined the organization’s extensive expertise, including advanced research on functional and technical textiles, as well as its comprehensive suite of testing and certification services.

A key point of discussion was the potential collaboration on the ‘MADE IN GREEN’ initiative. This traceable product label identifies textiles that are sustainably manufactured, safe for human ecology, environmentally friendly, and produced in socially responsible facilities, based on the STeP certification for sustainable production.

Further talks explored cooperation on the development of a Digital Product Passport (DPP), an innovative tool designed to ensure greater traceability and transparency throughout the apparel value chain.

BGMEA President Mr. Mahmud Hasan Khan welcomed the dialogue and underscored the critical need for industry-wide harmonization.

He emphasized the importance of establishing a unified code of conduct for social and environmental compliance, which would significantly help reduce audit fatigue among manufacturers and streamline sustainability efforts.

Both parties expressed a strong commitment to continuing discussions and working towards a formal collaboration that supports the Bangladeshi RMG industry’s journey towards greater sustainability, innovation, and global leadership.
